Description
This helmet, dated to the 15th century CE, is fitted with a chainmail aventail.
The domed cap is made of iron and partially gilded. Suspended from its lower edge is a flexible chain curtain, or aventail, designed to protect the neck and shoulders.
The combination of a rigid helmet and articulated mail provided both protection and mobility. Such construction is characteristic of military equipment of the period.
The gilded surface adds decorative emphasis and reflects skilled metalworking. In some contexts, ornamented armor could indicate status as well as function.
This object illustrates the integration of protection and craftsmanship in 15th-century CE Central Asian arms.
