Description

This model represents the mausoleum of Imam al-Maturidi — a prominent theologian from Samarkand and one of the key systematizers of Islamic thought.
Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, who lived in the 9th–10th centuries, developed a rational school of Sunni theology known as Maturidism. His doctrine emphasized that reason and faith are not contradictory but complementary, enabling a deeper and more conscious understanding of religious truths.
The mausoleum is located on the historical site of the Chokardiza cemetery, one of the significant burial grounds of medieval Samarkand. Its present architectural form was established in the early 21st century as part of a broader effort to revive and reinterpret the intellectual heritage of the region .
The structure reflects classical principles of Islamic architecture: strict geometry, the transition from a square to a dome, and a vertical composition symbolizing the desire for heavenly order. The turquoise dome visually connects the monument to the architectural tradition of Samarkand.
This model represents not only a burial site but also a symbol of an enduring intellectual tradition. The legacy of al-Maturidi played a decisive role in shaping a balanced and rational theological approach that became characteristic of Islamic culture in Central Asia.
