Description
This silver oil lamp dates to the 10th–12th centuries and reflects metalworking traditions of medieval Central Asia.
Lamps of this type were used in religious and domestic settings. In Islamic culture, light held practical importance and was also associated in religious texts with guidance and knowledge.
The lamp has two spouts for wicks, allowing increased illumination. Its rounded body rests on a stable base, and small openings help regulate airflow during burning. A handle facilitates carrying and placement.
The use of silver indicates skilled craftsmanship and may suggest a commission for a well-appointed interior.
This object illustrates both the functional and aesthetic aspects of lighting devices in medieval urban life.
