Description

This bronze inkwell dates to the 12th–13th centuries and reflects the material culture of writing in medieval Central Asia.
In this period, writing played an important role in religious, scholarly, and administrative life. Manuscripts of the Qur’an, legal documents, and scientific texts were copied by trained scribes. Objects such as this inkwell were used in madrasas, administrative offices, and libraries.
The vessel has a compact cylindrical form with a fitted lid designed to protect the ink from drying. Small openings allowed controlled access and ventilation. Bronze ensured durability and long-term use.
This object illustrates the practical tools that supported written culture in medieval urban society.
