Description

This bronze incense burner dates to the 10th–11th centuries, a period of cultural development in Mawarannahr.
Incense burners were used to burn aromatic resins and herbs in religious and domestic settings. Fragrance played an important role in ritual practice and in shaping the atmosphere of interior spaces.
The object was cast in bronze. The bowl rests on three legs, providing stability. Openwork decoration allows smoke to circulate, while a wavy ornamental band runs along the rim — a motif characteristic of metalwork of this period.
This incense burner reflects everyday devotional and domestic practices in medieval Central Asia, where craft traditions developed alongside religious and urban life.
