Description
This ceramic vessel, dated to the 9th–10th centuries, originates from Samarkand, an important urban center of early medieval Central Asia.
Vessels of this type have been associated with the storage of mercury, a substance mentioned in medical, metallurgical, and alchemical texts of the period. Specialized containers were required to handle materials used in craft production and scientific practice.
The compact spherical body provides stability, while the narrow neck helps reduce spillage and evaporation. The surface shows light mottled patterns created by the composition of the clay and the firing process.
This object illustrates the material culture connected with craft production and scholarly activity in medieval Samarkand.
