Description

This bronze pestle dates to the 11th–12th centuries and was discovered in Termez, an important urban center of medieval Central Asia.
Pestles were used with mortars to grind herbs, minerals, and other substances. Such tools were common in domestic settings, craft workshops, and medical practice. In this period, the preparation of medicinal compounds required careful and precise processing of ingredients.
The thickened ends provided a secure grip and allowed force to be distributed evenly during grinding. Bronze ensured durability and resistance to wear, making the tool suitable for repeated use.
This object illustrates the practical implements that supported craft production and medical practice in medieval urban life.
