Kaaba Door Cover. 6,6 × 3,4 m

Audio guide

Description

This object is a fragment of the kiswah, the sacred covering of the Kaaba, specifically the section that covered its door.
The kiswah is made of black silk and decorated with Qur’anic inscriptions embroidered in silver threads plated with gold. The raised effect is achieved through padded embroidery techniques.
The section covering the door is known as the sitara. It is distinguished by a more elaborate composition, including large epigraphic panels and medallions arranged in strict symmetry.
The kiswah is replaced annually during the Hajj. The removed covering is then cut into fragments and distributed as gifts, which explains the presence of such pieces in museum collections.
For Central Asia, this object reflects longstanding connections with Mecca through pilgrimage, craftsmanship, and scholarly exchange.
It offers a rare opportunity to study the material and artistic dimensions of a sacred textile.
