Description
This bronze candlestick dates to the 12th century and is associated with the Khwarazmshah period in Central Asia.
The form is balanced and clearly structured: a broad, stable base rises into a cylindrical socket designed to hold a candle. The construction emphasizes durability and practical use.
The surface is decorated with silver inlay. In this technique, silver is inserted into engraved channels cut into the bronze, creating contrast between the two metals. The ornament is arranged in horizontal bands and medallions featuring vegetal and stylized figural motifs, reflecting metalworking traditions of the period.
Candlesticks of this type were used in interior settings, where reflected light interacted with the inlaid decoration.
This object illustrates the technical skill and decorative practices of medieval metalwork in Central Asia.
