Description

This is a page from the manuscript Majālis al-‘Ushshāq, “The Assemblies of Lovers,” created in Khurasan in 1560. The work belongs to the Sufi literary tradition, where love is understood as a spiritual path leading to divine truth rather than a worldly emotion.
The miniature depicts an encounter between Sultan Ala al-Din and the renowned Sufi master Najm al-Din Kubra, founder of the Kubrawiyya order, which played a major role in the spiritual history of Khorezm and Central Asia. The scene emphasizes the supremacy of spiritual authority over political power: the ruler appears as a listener, while the Sufi embodies higher wisdom.
The composition unfolds in carefully structured layers. Architectural elements, gestures, and the gazes of the figures guide the viewer toward the central dialogue between knowledge and authority. Rich colors, gilded details, and refined calligraphy enhance the sacred atmosphere of the scene.
This miniature reflects a defining feature of the Khwarazmshah era, the close interweaving of rulership, theology, and mystical philosophy, where a sovereign is portrayed not only as a political leader but also as a seeker on a spiritual journey.
