Description

This is a 7th-century ceramic statue of a rider, representing the pre-Islamic artistic traditions of Central Asia.
The figure stands on a rectangular base. The horse is shown in a stable stance, with an emphasized neck and compact body. The rider sits upright; the elongated torso and schematically rendered arms suggest a typified rather than individualized image. The facial features are generalized.
Such representations reflect the importance of the horse in the social and military culture of the region. In the 7th century, cavalry played a significant role in the interregional dynamics of Central Asia.
The plastic treatment combines stylization with selective observation. The sculptor conveys a stable iconographic type rather than a portrait likeness. The terracotta surface and visible traces of hand modeling emphasize its artisanal character.
This statue illustrates the interaction between sedentary and steppe traditions characteristic of ancient Fergana and neighboring areas.
