7th century СЕ. Fergana. Ceramic. 25 × 24 cm

Audio guide

Description

This large ceramic water jug was created in the Fergana Valley in the 7th century CE.
It belongs to the pre-Islamic period of the region, when Fergana functioned as an important agricultural and craft center of Central Asia.
Its substantial volume, rounded body, and relatively narrow neck indicate a utilitarian purpose — the storage and cooling of water. Thick walls and a stable form ensured durability and the preservation of its contents. The undecorated surface reflects the craftsman’s emphasis on structure and proportion.
Vessels of this type were used in domestic contexts and were likely placed in residential or storage areas. The light-colored clay and traces of manual finishing suggest local production.
This jug illustrates the technological traditions of ancient Fergana and its participation in the broader development of material culture in Central Asia on the eve of the significant transformations of the 7th–8th centuries.
