Description
This handled jug was created in the Fergana Valley in the 7th century CE.
The period precedes the spread of Islam in the region and reflects the established urban culture of pre-Islamic Central Asia.
The vessel’s form demonstrates balanced plasticity, with a rounded body, a gently defined neck, and a slightly undulating rim. A small loop handle connects the shoulder to the neck, facilitating practical use. The absence of ornament underscores the object’s functional character and the artisan’s attention to proportion.
Jugs of this type were used in everyday contexts for storing and pouring water or other liquids. The light-colored clay and traces of manual finishing suggest local production.
This object illustrates the developed craft traditions of Fergana and its participation in the broader cultural processes of Central Asia on the eve of significant historical change.
