Description
You are looking at a ceramic vessel from the Fergana Valley dating to the 4th–3rd centuries BCE.
It belongs to an early phase in the development of settled agricultural communities in the region.
The vessel has a rounded body with a relatively narrow neck. Small lateral projections may have served for attaching a cord or for facilitating handling. The surface is decorated with dark brown painted geometric motifs on a light ground. Zigzags, triangles, and intersecting lines form a rhythmic composition characteristic of early Fergana ceramic traditions.
Vessels of this type were used for storing water, grain, or other commodities. They combine practical function with decorative design, reflecting a well-developed level of craftsmanship.
In Uzbek, this form of vessel is known as xurmacha. The object provides insight into the artistic preferences and technological practices of Fergana communities more than two millennia ago.
