Description
This ceramic bowl dates to the 5th century CE and was produced in the Fergana Valley.
Though modest in size, it reflects the developed artistic traditions of the region.
The form is simple and well balanced, with gently expanding walls rising from a stable base. The decoration forms the visual focus of the vessel. The surface is adorned with geometric motifs painted in mineral pigments over a light clay ground. Alternating triangular and wave-like lines create a rhythmic composition that may evoke flowing water or mountainous landscapes.
Such motifs were characteristic of early medieval ceramics in the Fergana Valley. Geometric ornament functioned not only as decoration but was also often associated with ideas of harmony and ordered structure.
This bowl illustrates how utilitarian objects could embody both aesthetic intention and skilled craftsmanship in ancient Central Asia.
