Description

This small bronze jug from the 9th century belongs to the early phase of Islamic artistic development in Mawarannahr.
Vessels of this size were commonly used to store perfumed oils, medicinal infusions, or incense substances. The narrow neck allowed controlled pouring, an important feature in both pharmaceutical and ritual contexts.
The form is balanced and elegant: a rounded body rises into a slender neck with a slightly flared rim. Decorative bands with geometric and vegetal motifs encircle the surface. The object was cast in bronze and subsequently refined, demonstrating advanced metalworking skills.
The vessel reflects the urban culture of the early Islamic period, when new religious ideas merged with established regional artistic traditions.
