Description
The composition of this folio immediately reveals a balance between text and empty space. This 10th-century Qur’anic page, written in naskh script, contains verses 116–119 from Surah al-Ma’idah.
These verses present a theological dialogue concerning prophecy and responsibility – words addressed to Isa, son of Maryam. They affirm the distinction between the divine and the human, emphasizing the purity of monotheistic belief.
The naskh script appears mature and assured: elongated horizontal strokes, even rhythm, and red diacritical marks ensuring precise recitation. The format suggests suitability for personal study or small-group recitation.
A gilded medallion marking a pause or completion of meaning adds a subtle visual accent without disrupting the disciplined structure. Ornament remains subordinate to text – a defining feature of early manuscript culture.
This folio illustrates how, during the First Renaissance of Islamic civilization, theological clarity and aesthetic restraint were united in the art of transmitting the Qur’an.
