Description
This ewer, dated to the 10th–11th centuries, is shaped in the form of a stylized peacock — a motif found in the artistic traditions of the medieval Islamic world.
In various artistic contexts, the peacock was associated with beauty and paradise imagery. The motif has earlier roots in Near Eastern and Iranian traditions and was adapted within Islamic visual culture.
The surface is engraved with benedictory inscriptions in Arabic script, conveying wishes of prosperity and protection. Silver inlay enhances the decoration and reflects skilled metalworking techniques.
The elongated body and curved handle create a silhouette suggestive of a bird’s form.
This vessel illustrates the integration of figural design, inscription, and refined craftsmanship in medieval metalwork.
