Description

In this lagan, attention is drawn not to a single motif but to the relationship between empty space and the clearly defined ornamental band along the rim. The decoration carefully frames the surface, leaving the center largely untouched.
This lagan dates to the 11th century, a time when stable artistic traditions in ceramics were forming in the cities of Central Asia. During the period presented in the exhibition as the First Renaissance, craftsmen sought clarity of composition, balancing form, proportion, and decorative rhythm. Dishes like this were part of everyday domestic life.
The surface is covered with a light slip, creating an even background for the decoration. Along the inner rim runs an ornamental band painted in a dark tone. Its repeating elements emphasize the circular shape of the dish and guide the viewer’s gaze around the edge. The open central field enhances the sense of calm and balance.
Cracks, losses, and traces of restoration are visible on the surface, pointing to long use. This lagan reflects the artistic sensibilities of the 11th century through a restrained combination of form, rhythm, and function.
