Description

This ceramic jug dates to the 8th–9th centuries CE and was produced in the region of Shash, the historical center of the Tashkent oasis. During the early medieval period, Shash remained an important craft and trade hub connected to transregional routes of Central Asia.
The vessel features a rounded body, a relatively narrow neck, and a vertical handle linking the rim to the shoulder. This construction ensured practical handling and controlled pouring. Its restrained form and absence of elaborate decoration emphasize functional purpose.
The surface is coated with a light slip, and traces of firing indicate the use of the potter’s wheel and kiln technology.
Such jugs were used for storing water and beverages in domestic contexts. They illustrate the continuity of local ceramic traditions of Shach during the cultural transformations of the 8th–9th centuries.
