Description

This ceramic jug dates to the 9th century CE and was produced in the region of Chach — later known as Shash — the historical predecessor of modern Tashkent.
In the early medieval period, this oasis remained an important center of craftsmanship and trade in Central Asia, continuing traditions established in earlier centuries.
The vessel features a rounded body, a low neck, and a short spout. Its surface is decorated with relief ornament composed of stylized vegetal and geometric motifs arranged in horizontal bands. This plastic technique is characteristic of local ceramics and reflects the development of molding and stamping methods in pottery production.
The decoration contains no figural imagery and is organized through rhythmic repetition, corresponding to broader artistic tendencies in the region during the 9th century.
Jugs of this type were used for storing and serving liquids. The object illustrates the continuity of craft traditions in Chach and their adaptation within the evolving cultural landscape of Central Asia.
