Description
This ceramic cup dates to the 1st millennium BCE and was produced in Fergana — a region where a developed settled culture had already emerged in antiquity.
The vessel stands on a high foot and widens gradually toward the rim. This form ensures stability while giving the object a more formal appearance. Its relatively thin walls and carefully profiled rim suggest the use of the potter’s wheel and a high level of technical skill.
In antiquity such cups may have been used for serving beverages in domestic or possibly ceremonial contexts.
This vessel illustrates both the artisanal craftsmanship and the agricultural traditions of ancient Fergana, a region engaged in early networks of interregional exchange.
