Description
This double ceramic vessel from the Fergana Valley dates to the period between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE, corresponding to the flourishing era of ancient Dayuan mentioned in Chinese chronicles.
The object consists of two rounded containers joined by a central bridge. Such paired forms may have been used to store different liquids — such as oils, perfumes, or other substances — and may also have carried symbolic connotations of duality and unity.
Its modest scale and undecorated surface emphasize functionality. The slightly coarse texture reflects firing techniques characteristic of ancient Fergana pottery.
This vessel represents the everyday material culture of a society situated at the crossroads of early Silk Road exchanges.
