Description
This ceramic lamp stand dates to the 7th–8th centuries CE and was produced in Fergana.
It belongs to the late phase of the region’s pre-Islamic tradition, when fixed light sources were commonly used in domestic contexts.
The form is concise: a circular dish with a central depression and a distinctive serrated rim. The rhythmically repeated projections create an ornamental effect through plastic modeling rather than painted decoration.
The central cavity was intended to support an oil lamp or a small vessel containing a wick. Such stands provided stability and helped protect surrounding surfaces from heat.
Although undecorated, the sculptural articulation of the rim gives the object a visually defined character.
This piece offers insight into everyday domestic practices in ancient Fergana and illustrates the craftsman’s attention to functional balance and formal clarity.
