Description
This is a rare example of multi-chamber pottery — a triple vessel dating to the 6th–7th centuries CE in Fergana.
Three small bowl-like containers are joined into a single composition. Such a form required careful planning: each section was shaped individually on the potter’s wheel and attached while the clay remained moist. The joints had to be precisely smoothed, as any irregularity during drying or firing could result in cracking.
Vessels of this type were likely used to hold or serve different substances simultaneously, such as oils, pigments, perfumes, or medicinal mixtures. In ritual contexts, they may also have carried symbolic significance.
This object illustrates the developed ceramic traditions of early medieval Fergana, combining functional design with possible symbolic meaning.
