Description

This marriage contract, dated 710 CE, was discovered at the fortress of Mount Mug near Panjikent.
It represents a rare document reflecting Sogdian legal culture in the early eighth century.
The text is written in the Sogdian language in black ink on paper — a material that was only beginning to circulate widely in the region at that time. The contract outlines the terms of marriage, property obligations, and legal guarantees protecting the bride. It specifies dowry arrangements and responsibilities in the event that the agreement was violated.
Such documents reveal a developed legal system within Sogdian society. Women acted as legal parties to contracts, and their property rights were formally recorded, indicating a structured framework of family and property law.
The document was found within the archive of Devashtich, the last Sogdian ruler known for resisting the Arab expansion into the region. Through records of this kind, the social and legal realities of the period are preserved in documentary form.
It is among the earliest surviving written marriage contracts from Central Asia.
