Description
This silver bowl from Sogdiana dates to the 4th–5th centuries CE, a period during which Sogdian cities flourished as major centers along the Silk Roads.
The vessel is characterized by a hemispherical body and a gently flaring rim. Unlike later, more elaborately decorated examples, its aesthetic emphasis lies in proportion, balance, and the refined surface of hammered silver. The smooth finish demonstrates the high technical proficiency of Sogdian silversmiths.
Such bowls were used in elite domestic settings and may also have functioned in ceremonial contexts or as prestigious diplomatic gifts. Sogdian silverware has been discovered far beyond Central Asia, attesting to its wide circulation and appreciation.
This piece represents an early stage in the development of Sogdian toreutics, preceding the elaborate relief compositions characteristic of the early medieval period.
