Description

This silver drachm, minted in the 2nd century BCE during the reign of Menander I, is one of the finest examples of Greco-Bactrian coinage. Menander I was a prominent historical figure who played a key role in strengthening cultural and trade relations between the Hellenistic world and India. The coin typically features the ruler’s portrait, Greek inscriptions, and sometimes Indian symbols, reflecting the cultural synthesis of the two civilizations. Measuring 21 mm in diameter, the drachm demonstrates the advanced metallurgical techniques, minting style, and aesthetic values of its time. Menander’s coins were not only instruments of trade but also symbols of political authority and religious belief. This artifact is an invaluable source for studying ancient numismatics, Hellenistic art, and the political structure of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom.
