“Hoshiya Tafsir Qazi ala sura al-Fath”
Sadriddin Bukhari. 1584. Bukhara. Arabic. Nastaliq script. Samarkand paper. 19 × 13 sm. Manuscript of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, inv. No. 4201/II
Description
Before you is a theological manuscript devoted to the interpretation of the sura al-Fath “Victory.” Its author, Sadriddin Bukhari, composed a hāshiya, or detailed scholarly gloss, on the famous tafsir of al-Baydawi, one of the most authoritative theologians of the medieval Islamic world.
The pages immediately reveal the manuscript’s educational function. The main text occupies a narrow vertical column, while the wide margins were intentionally left for later notes, glosses, and additions. Within the manuscript itself, annotations written by different hands can still be seen, reflecting generations of reading, teaching, and scholarly discussion.
Such a layout embodies the scholarly traditions of Mawarannahr, where knowledge was understood as an ongoing dialogue between generations of scholars.
The choice of sura al-Fath also carried special meaning. During the reign of Abdallah Khan II, the themes of victory and divine support held not only religious significance, but also political importance for the Bukhara Khanate.
This manuscript presents Bukhara as one of the major centers of Qur’anic scholarship and intellectual culture in Central Asia.
