Order established by Emir of Bukhara

Late 19th century. Bukhara. Silver7 × 7 sm

Description

Before you is an order of the Emirate of Bukhara – one of the most striking symbols of late Central Asian statehood at the end of the nineteenth century.
Its shape recalls European order stars, yet its visual language remains deeply Islamic. At the center there is no portrait of a ruler or heraldic emblem. Instead, the medallion bears Arabic calligraphy and symbols associated with Bukhara as the “Noble Emirate.”
Silver rays extend outward in the form of an eight-pointed star, a motif well known in Islamic decorative art. The medallion is covered with blue, turquoise, and green enamel. In the artistic traditions of the region, these colors symbolized authority, spiritual dignity, and celestial harmony.
This order emerged during a period of active diplomatic relations between Bukhara, the Russian Empire, and Europe. The emirs sought to communicate with the outside world through the language of modern state insignia while preserving their own religious and cultural identity.
Thus, this decoration became not merely an award, but a visual image of Islamic Bukhara at the threshold of a new era.
