Miniature

14th–15th centuries CE. Central Asia. Nastaliq script. Paper. 16 × 14.5 cm. Frame: 27 × 20 cm

Description

Before you is a rare folio of a medieval miniature created within the cultural environment of Central Asia in the 14th–15th centuries. Although delicate in appearance, this page reflects the sophisticated intellectual world of the Timurid era, when the art of the book united poetry, calligraphy, historical memory, and courtly culture.
The composition is executed in the nim-qalam technique — a refined contour drawing made with reddish and ochre ink. The artist almost completely abandoned color in order to emphasize movement, rhythm, and the expressive quality of line. In the center, one can discern a military or diplomatic scene with horsemen, warriors, and dynamic interaction. Such a manner was especially valued in the workshops of Herat and Samarkand, where drawing itself was regarded as an independent artistic form rather than merely a preparatory sketch.
The textual panels above and below the image are written in elegant nastaliq script, the principal literary calligraphy of the Persianate world. The four-column layout is characteristic of manuscripts belonging to the epic tradition of the “Shahnama.” Scholars associate this folio with narratives concerning the heroic figure Kershasp from ancient Iranian epic literature.
Manuscripts of this type were produced in royal kitabkhana workshops, where calligraphers, poets, painters, and binders worked together. For the Timurid rulers, the book was not only a source of knowledge, but also a symbol of cultural prestige and intellectual authority.
