Description
This miniature depicts a meeting between Mirzo Ulugh Beg and the poet Arif Azari, illustrating the intellectual culture of the Timurid period.
The scene is set within a garden environment. In Islamic visual tradition, the garden represents order and harmony, often associated with the idea of paradise. The cypress tree and flowering plants reinforce themes of eternity and renewal.
At the center of the composition is a book held by Ulugh Beg. This detail emphasizes the elevated status of knowledge. The ruler is presented not as a military figure, but as a participant in scholarly dialogue.
The poet sits at the same level opposite him, a compositional device that reflects the idea of intellectual equality within the space of conversation.
The miniature demonstrates key artistic features: flattened spatial construction, decorative architectural elements, and a насыщенная color scheme. The deep blue background evokes the celestial sphere, closely associated with Ulugh Beg’s astronomical pursuits.
Cartouches containing Persian inscriptions, written in nasta‘liq script, provide poetic commentary on the scene, integrating text and image into a unified semantic structure.
The work embodies a central idea of the Timurid era — the synthesis of science, poetry, and power — presenting Samarkand as a major intellectual center of the Islamic world.
