Description
This manuscript is a copy of a geographical work by Hafiz-i Abru, one of the leading scholars of the Timurid period.
Hafiz-i Abru served at the court of Shahrukh Mirza and was part of an intellectual milieu dedicated to organizing knowledge about the world. His works combine historical and geographical information, reflecting a conception of space shaped by political and cultural connections.
This copy was produced in sixteenth-century Bukhara, after the decline of the Timurid dynasty. Its existence demonstrates the continuity of scholarly traditions across changing political contexts.
On the left page, a diagram drawn in red ink can be observed. Such schemes often illustrate genealogical or historical relationships. In medieval Islamic scholarship, geography frequently incorporated elements of dynastic and historical analysis.
The main text is written in nastaliq script, typical of Persian manuscript culture. The structured layout and rubrication assist the reader in navigating complex material.
The binding features a central medallion, characteristic of regional manuscript production. Signs of wear indicate prolonged use.
This manuscript reflects a key feature of Central Asian intellectual culture: the effort to describe the world systematically, integrating geography, history, and political order.
