Description

This manuscript, titled “Bahr al-Jawahir” or “Sea of Jewels,” dates to the fifteenth century and was compiled by Muhammad ibn Yusuf, a physician from Herat.
It belongs to the genre of medical reference texts. Its purpose is to systematize terminology, including names of diseases, medicinal substances, plants, and therapeutic procedures. Such works were used by practicing physicians as practical tools for navigating specialized vocabulary.
The text is written in naskh script, a clear and highly legible calligraphic style widely used for scholarly writing. Key terms and sections are highlighted through rubrication in red, facilitating quick reference.
The manuscript reflects a synthesis of intellectual traditions. Its terminology incorporates Arabic and Persian knowledge alongside elements derived from Greek medical authorities such as Hippocrates and Galen, transmitted through translation and commentary.
The relatively small format indicates practical use. This is not a ceremonial manuscript, but a working reference designed for daily consultation.
The leather binding, though modestly decorated, underscores the value attributed to medical knowledge while maintaining functionality.
This object demonstrates the advanced level of medical scholarship in fifteenth-century Central Asia, where knowledge was actively organized and applied in professional practice.
