Description

This folio comes from the manuscript Nigaristan, produced in Shiraz in the 1570s by the artist and historian Qazi Ahmad Ghaffari. The miniature depicts Mansur ibn Nuh, a ruler of the Samanid dynasty, together with the renowned physician and philosopher Abu Bakr al-Razi. Rather than illustrating a specific event, the image presents an idealized dialogue between political authority and scientific knowledge.
Although created several centuries after the Samanid period, the manuscript reflects the intellectual foundations formed in Central Asia during the 9th–10th centuries. Al-Razi here embodies a tradition of experimental medicine and rational inquiry—an approach later systematized in the works of Ibn Sina, who emerged from the same cultural continuum.
The composition resembles a scholarly setting: architectural niches, textiles, and ornaments frame the figures, while written panels integrate text and image. This unity of word and illustration is characteristic of Islamic manuscript culture.
The page reminds us that the First Renaissance of Central Asia was an era when scientific thought became a visible and valued element of political and cultural life.
