Description

This manuscript presents Central Asian philosophy as a conceptual model for organizing society.
It is a 17th-century copy of Abu Nasr al-Farabi’s 10th-century treatise “The Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City,” one of the foundational texts of political philosophy in the Islamic world.
Al-Farabi describes the ideal society as an integrated organism, where each component fulfills its role for the common good. At its center stands a ruler who combines intellectual authority with ethical excellence.
The work reflects a synthesis of Greek and Islamic thought. Platonic ideas of the state are reinterpreted through Islamic theological concepts, where philosophy and revelation are understood as complementary paths to truth.
A notable feature of this manuscript is the use of the nasta‘liq script for an Arabic text, characteristic of later Central Asian manuscript culture and indicative of its aesthetic refinement.
The continued copying of this work centuries after its composition demonstrates the enduring relevance of al-Farabi’s ideas in the intellectual life of the region.
This object illustrates both the development of philosophy and the continuity of scholarly traditions across time.
