Description
This bird-shaped jug was created in Fergana in the 4th–1st centuries BCE.
It belongs to an early phase in the development of the region’s settled culture, preceding the major transformations of the medieval period in Central Asia.
The vessel takes the form of a rounded body set on three small legs. The projecting spout is conceived as a beak, while the handle follows the curve of the bird’s back. Such a synthesis of utilitarian function and zoomorphic imagery is characteristic of ancient ceramic traditions across Eurasia.
The surface is decorated with incised and painted ornament. Grid and linear motifs articulate the volume, structuring and emphasizing the form.
Vessels of this type may have served domestic or ritual functions. The jug provides insight into the artistic concepts of ancient Fergana and its connection to broader cultural traditions of the ancient world.
