Description
Compact in size, with a rounded body and short neck, this jug exemplifies restrained functional design. Its proportions are carefully balanced for ease of handling and everyday use.
The vessel dates to the fifth century CE, a period marked by active cultural interaction between Ferghana and neighboring regions. It was produced from local clay containing visible mineral inclusions, giving the surface a distinctive granular texture. The firing resulted in a natural terracotta tone without the application of glaze.
A single handle connects the rim to the shoulder, enhancing structural stability. Such jugs were used for storing and serving water or other liquids. Their modest scale indicates domestic use in both urban and rural settings.
Material culture in Ferghana during this period combined practicality with continuity of craft traditions. Even in its simplicity, the form reflects accumulated expertise in ceramic production.
Within the “Ancient Ferghana Civilization” section, this jug represents the everyday dimension of society, where durable form and clear function sustained cultural continuity.
