Description
These carved ivory chess pieces date back to the 7th century and were discovered among the ruins of Afrosiyob, the ancient center of Sogdian culture. They were unearthed in 1977 during archaeological excavations beneath layers associated with a mosque from 712 CE. The set includes figures such as a bishop, a horseman, two rooks, and a pawn, all delicately carved from ivory. Their shapes, facial expressions, and fine details reflect the high artistic level of the time. The Afrosiyob chess pieces are among the earliest evidence of intellectual games in Central Asia, confirming the cultural significance of chess in Sogdian society and the exceptional craftsmanship of local artisans.
